The Enigma of the Hour is an oil painting produced in 1911 by Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico

The Enigma of the Hour was one of the most famous paintings of Metaphysical period during the 20th century.

The Enigma of the Hour picture depicts an urban environment with architecture and classical lighting that Giorgio de Chirico’s included in his several paintings and later remains as the hallmark. Chirico painted several figures around the urban environment having some vague features which give the sense to the viewer that they are fairly absent. On top of this painting was a large clock that reads six minutes to three. The time included doesn’t indicate any meaning to the painting or to its theme.

Giorgio de Chirico painted The Enigma of the Hour during an early phase of his career when he focused on metaphysical painting technique. These painting techniques focus on town squares and urban civilization environments. Giorgio de Chirico founded the Metaphysical school of visual art with his friend Carlo Carra.

Giorgio de Chirico was one of the most philosophically intense artists among various other visual artists of the 20th century. Between 1910 and 1920, Giorgio de Chirico achievement of pinnacle artist from his metaphysical paintings phase. The philosophical concept behind these paintings was that we are unaware of many things in-spite we know about it, we can sense it emotionally and intuitively.

Cabaret Scene is an oil painting produced in 1922 by Spanish painter Salvador Dali.

Cabaret Scene was known as one of the most famous works of Salvador Dali by giving it a cubist influence.

With Cabaret Scene, Salvador Dali attempted a unique cubist experiment for the first time in his paintings. The work was between his earlier impressionist techniques and the surrealist technique which he had not developed yet. Pablo Picasso was another artist and Dali got the inspiration for this painting from him. Salvador Dali was once expelled from his school, the School of Fine Arts in Spain. He showed his inspiration widely through this painting. The dimensions of the painting Cabaret Scene were 52 cm × 41 cm (20 in × 16 in).

This painting contains various scenes in three-dimensional forms. Several men and women were shown in this painting with round tables between them thus giving an indication that the scene was from a restaurant. Many men were dressed gently in coats and a hat. On the table, a viewer can see a bottle of wine with two cups or glasses.

During the painting of Cabaret Scene, Salvador Dali said that behind the party there was an opened kitchen door from which we can hear the scurrying of women with red hands. They were bestial women and he could catch the glimpse of their hairs that were straggling and heavy rumps.

The work cannot be viewed as owned by a private collection of Francois Petit in Paris

Murdering Airplane is a collage produced in 1920 by German painter Max Ernst.

Murdering Airplane was inspired by World War I in which Ernest also served as a warrior.

This painting depicts a monstrous airplane with human arms although unrealistic giving it a surrealist feel and it was flying over an open field. In the lower right-hand corner of the painting, there were two soldiers carrying a third soldier. The third soldier was badly wounded in the war. The Dada movement was created after World War I as a critical response to the war. Max Ernest had significance with this movement who had served in the war. Through his work of Murdering Airplane, he wanted to convey the scenes of aerial warfare that he saw from his own eyes, occurred in that war. The Murdering Airplane itself had human arms that could swoop down to kill enemy foes.

Max Ernest tries to stand out the color of the Murdering Airplane as well as the soldiers on the ground which reminds the viewers of the horrors of the First World War I in the west. The image of the aircraft not only abstracts that it was a machine controlled by the pilot but also an extension of humans. The scene was colored rather grey and gloomy with spots of color as Ernest wanted to draw the attention of the viewer towards the soldiers and the plane.

Murdering Airplane was a very small collage by the famous surrealist Max Ernst. He wanted to maintain the simplicity of the painting such that it would be easier to understand the horrors of the war. There was an absence of background and a small number of figures and peoples. The Monsterous creature machine dominates the sky as well as the painting. The dimensions of the painting Murdering Airplane were 6.35 cm × 13.97 cm or 2 1⁄2 in × 5 1⁄2 in.

The Son of Man is an oil painting produced in 1946 by Belgian painter Rene Magritte.

Rene Magritte painted The Son of Man as a self-portrait.

In The Son of Man, a man was dressed gently in an overcoat with a bowler hat at the top of his head standing in front of a wall. Beyond this man was a cloudy sky and a sea. A green apple was painted on the face of the man who covers it fully. However, the painter leaves the eyes which the viewer can see peeking over the edge of that green apple. Magritte bends the left arm of this man backward at the elbow. The painting The Son of Man was similar to another painting by Rene Magritte the Great War on Facades. Both these images feature the same figure standing in front of the wall looking closely at the sea but The Great War on Facades features a female rather than a male. She was holding an umbrella and her face was covered with a flower. The dimension of the painting The Son of Man were 116 cm × 89 cm or 45.67 in × 35 in.

Swans Reflecting Elephants is an oil painting produced in 1937 by Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

In Swans Reflecting Elephants painting, three swans in front of the picture were seen near the leafless trees and they were reflected by the water below them. The image reflected seems to be of elephant’s trunks similar to swans neck above the water and trees become the lower part of the elephants i.e. legs. The background of this picture contains a Catalonian landscape colored deep as there was a swirl around the lake but the water seems to be still. Salvador Dali hometown was Catalonian and thus depicted by the landscape. On the left-hand side of the painting was the self-portrait of Salvador Dali seems to be facing away from the scene. It means that he was frustrated with not having enough attention for his work in surrealism artwork,

The painting contains double images which were his technique of Paranoia critical method. In 1935, he said about this method to be The Conquest of the Irrational in which an understanding of irrational should be based on the critical association of the various phenomena. Dali used this technique to bring the visual illusion in the form of double images which attracts the viewer and he has to think about it.

In Swans Reflecting Elephants painting, Dali uses the water of the river to reflect the double image. Another painting of Dali was Metamorphosis of Narcissus in which he used the refection of the narcissus thus creating double images of the shape of his hand on the right-hand side of the painting. The dimensions of the painting Swans Reflecting Elephants were 51 cm × 77 cm or 20.08 in × 30.31 in.

Rooms By The Sea is an oil painting produced in 1951 by American painter Edward Hopper.

One of the greatest works of Edward Hopper painted on a very large canvas.

Edward Hopper had a great interest in the different effects of the sunlight and begun his painting career by portraying these effects on canvases when he was a young student in Paris. He then moved to New York and turned into a mature artist while designing a sunny secluded studio of his own at Truro. The scene depicts looking at the ocean on a sunny day. Edward Hopper spent most of his days in Cape Cod, Massachusetts during summers. This painting was based on the scene that was from the back door of the studio. The empty room was filled with the essence of silences, the mystery of existence, spirit, and air. His work was inspired by Van Gogh as they both try to paint the objects as if they were self-portraits of their own.

Edward Hopper has two titles in mind at starting of this painting, one was Rooms by the Sea and the other was The Jumping Off Place. But, later he noticed that the scene which he had painted depicted much similar to the composition of the Rooms by the Sea. So, he deleted the other one as it perceived to have some of the malign overtones. The image thus seems to convey about the silences of nature and its beauty by the sea.

Hopper had a gift of noticing smaller details and communication with his inner life. He tried to find the sense of beauty, the desolation, and despair of feelings through the figures, objects, and buildings that he painted. This painting of Hopper depicts realistic behavior and surrealistic all at once. The dimensions of the painting Rooms By The Sea were 73.66 cm x 101.98 cm

The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living is a sculpture produced in 1991 by English artist Damien Steven Hirst.

One of the most recognizable works of Britart, a true example of Contemporary and Conceptual art, even though the originality of idea and the artistic value of sculpture have been under discussion.

The sculpture was commissioned by Charles Saatchi, a businessman. Later it was sold to the famous art collector Steven A. Cohen. Shocking and effective sculpture is actually a tank filled with formaldehyde with dead tiger shark in it. Original shark was replaced due to decay. Title of the work is highly poetic and wide open to various viewers’ interpretations. It can be understood in a simple way, as a wordplay, but it can have also a deeper meaning. For the artist it is personal explanation of the idea of death. The fusion of verbally expressed and literally presented aspects of the same idea is what makes this sculpture undoubtedly a true piece of art.

The work cannot be viewed because it is in private collection of Steven A. Cohen.

When Will You Marry is a painting produced in 1892 by French artist Eugene Henri Paul Gauguin.

One of the well known paintings from Gauguin’s Tahitian-inspired collection recently has become famous as the most expensive piece of art ever sold. The buyer is Emirate of Qatar and amount is near $300 million. Travel exhibitions of painting already started and will last till January 2016.

Gauguin traveled to Tahiti in search for societies that preserved the original spirituality and are not spoiled by the modern style of life, but he found himself deeply disappointed since Tahiti has already been colonized by Europeans, especially French. Despite that he did not revealed pure art, he painted Tahitians and their life idealized. The painting depicts two Tahitian women, closer to the viewer is younger in traditional clothing, while the female person behind her is older and modern dressed. There is a white flower in young woman’s hair symbolizing her willingness to marry and the detail is emphasizing desired contrast.

The work can be viewed at The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.
